Trains and Swiss Pass

Switzerland, like most other European countries, has an excellent and developed transportation system. In my opinion even one of the best in Europe apart from Germany.

The main means of transportation in Switzerland is the train. Trains have become the lifeblood that transports millions of people including tourists around all parts of Switzerland. According to Swiss tourism advertisements, wherever we are in Switzerland, be it in cities or mountainous areas, there must be transportation facilities within a 1km radius, be it trains, buses, or ships/lakes.

Back again about trains, systems and train schedules are very easy to learn and follow. Departures are almost always exact unless there is a disruption in bad weather. The rail line covers almost all cities in Switzerland, for such a small country, its 20,000km rail network is fantastic. Train departure intervals are also very frequent, so we don't need to be afraid to miss the train. For example, the Zurich-Bern or Zurich-Luzern route, at least every 1 hour there is always a departure.

Swiss trains are operated by several regional operators, each with its own name that doesn't really matter to you, belonging to one Federal chain called SBB-CFF-FFS. You can download a map of the Swiss rail network directly from the Swiss Travel System website.

Buying train tickets is also quite easy. You can buy point-to-point directly when you want to leave at the station, or you can also buy a ticket pass, more or less like the all you can eat model. There are several types of passes, which you can read on the official website of the Swiss Travel System. So you need to research first how much you use the train to move between cities, the price of the pass compared to buying a point-to-point ticket

As an illustration, train tickets in Switzerland are quite expensive when compared to trains in France or Italy. Zurich to Luzern by train for 45 minutes the ticket price is CHF 23 one way, train Zurich to Interlaken (2 hours) CHF 65. Why is it like this, more or less because of the complexity of the construction process of this line, some have to go through the mountains, and some have to cross a bridge, where in Indonesia a detour would definitely be made because they don't want to be bothered with working on a complicated train line.

There are several types of passes, so you have to choose wisely according to your needs and schedule. With this pass you are free to ride trains, unlimited rides with any route as long as it is within the validity period of the pass.
